The Shizuoka prefecture government requested the dispatch of Shizuoka Disaster Medical Assis-tance Teams (DMATs). DMATs are mobile, trained medical teams that can be rapidly deployed during the acute phase of a sudden-onset disaster1). Our hospital dispatched the Juntendo Shizuoka DMAT (JS-DMAT) to this disaster in response to a request from the Shizuoka prefecture government. Accordingly, Juntendo Shizuoka Hospital postponed the dispatch of the JS-DMAT to secure the safety of the team. Despite the danger, some members of Shizuoka DMATs moved to a public health center (PHC) in Atami city, which was a gathering place for Shizuoka DMATs. As this was a PHC holiday and there were no medical staff, the members tried to estab-lish a DMAT headquarters in the PHC of Atami city (HQ-D-PHC) by explaining the significance of the DMAT to the PHC staff who were on duty. Then, the members of the Shizuoka DMAT collected information on victims from two local medical hospitals, which were classified as level II acute critical hospitals (there was no level I acute critical hospital in Atami city, Juntendo Shizuoka Hospital was the level I acute critical care hospital that was in charge of Atami city), investigated the capacity to receive patients in other hospitals in 5432.Report
