:new patients:repeatersefforts to give lectures to local medical associations, it exceeded 4,000 a year in 2010 (Figure 2). Since I could only spend two days a week on outpatient services, outpatients had to wait for my medical care three hours, and after that, the number of patients decreased to around 2,000.However, I had doubts about treating chronic pain with nerve block therapy alone. In 1996, I studied abroad for half a year at the Washington State University Pain Center in Seattle, USA, which was providing the world’s leading chronic pain treatment. My belief in chronic pain treatment changed dramatically when I witnessed chronic pain treatment centered on cognitive behavioral therapy, drug therapy, rehabilitation, and patient education. This center was the first in the world to use the multidisciplinary pain treatment techniques of Dr. John Bonica, who founded the International Association for the Study of Pain. Unfortunately, however, the center was closed 10 years ago due to financial difficulties. While both elective and emergency surgeries were increasing in numbers, I was appointed as the Chairman of the Tokai Regional Association of the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists in February, 2004, at the recommendation of Professor Yasuhiro Shimada of Nagoya University. I still feel sorry for being absorbed in my preparation for this under-taking and forcing the medical staff to do most of the anesthesia work.Figure 2 Annual numbers of outpatients visiting Pain Clinic. At this local meeting, the first ACLS seminar was held in the eastern part of Shizuoka prefecture. A snapshot of this seminar is shown in Figure 3. Dr. Yokoyama of Shizuoka Medical Center, Dr. Hayashi of Numazu City Hospital, and volunteer local para-medics launched “East Shizuoka ACLS” and laid the foundation for emergency resuscitation educa-tion here. This workshop was held as an ICLS course certified by the Japanese Association of Acute Medicine for doctors, nurses, and paramedics, and was held not only in Izunagaoka Town but also in Numazu City, Mishima City, Susono City, Ito City, and Shimoda City. It was also held as a training session for the local medical association. The logo Figure 3 A Snapshot of the ACLS seminarProfessor Shimada is in the center.429
